SUPER EASY All you have to do is add your name, email address, and phone number to the form.

Friends, you know we have been getting legislation on the floor for 8 years now. This is the first time we have passed all the Senate and House committees. It has taken a village and I am so grateful for each and every one of you who has picked up the phone, sent emails and showed up in Tallahassee. We are only succeeding because of our one united voice as grassroots advocates who have dealt with the grief of loss with no accountability because of this law.

Florida’s “Free Kill” law has denied justice to grieving families for decades. HB 6017 finally repeals this cruel and outdated statute — but powerful special interest groups are trying to pressure Governor DeSantis to veto it.

We can’t let that happen. When you click send this letter will go to Christian Harvey (designated to support DeSantis on making this decision to sign or veto) and also the Governor himself.

Governor DeSantis sign HB6017 into law and end Florida Free Kill

HB 6017 passed with bipartisan support and would finally allow adult children to seek justice for the wrongful death of a parent — and vice versa — in cases of proven medical negligence, regardless of marital status or dependents. The current law (Florida Statute 768.21(8)) has created a legal loophole that shields hospitals and bad actors from accountability when they harm the most vulnerable.

I know this firsthand - in 2016, I lost my father, Ken Sandberg, after a preventable medical tragedy. He was chemically restrained following a Baker Act admission and never woke up. His death certificate says "old age" — but we know the truth. And under this law, I had no legal right to even seek justice.

Since then, I’ve helped thousands of advocates speak up and find their voice through the Florida Medical Rights Association. We’re not lobbyists. We are the survivors left behind to fight for accountability for the loss of our loved ones to gross medical negligence. We are asking Governor DeSantis to do what’s right and sign HB 6017 into law.

Meanwhile, the Florida Medical Association (FMA) — backed by big insurance — is circulating fear-based talking points that lack any sworn testimony or verified data. They claim this bill will flood the courts with lawsuits, but offer no evidence. If they’re truly worried about rising malpractice claims, they should invest in preventing harm—not in silencing victims.

Let’s be clear: The same insurance companies under investigation for fraud are now trying to block your rights. You can read more in this ABC Action News report.
