Repeal Free Kill - Time Sensitive Advocacy Activities

Florida Statute § 768.21(8) denies unmarried adults without minor children equal protection under the law and deprives the survivors of these individuals of their right to access the courts for redress as enumerated by the Florida Constitution in the case of gross medical negligence causing death.

Each year, the Florida Medical Rights Association advocate population grows substantially. A sad fact that proves the point made by Senator Burgess last year (NBC News Channel 8 on your side ) that allowing families of unmarried people to file lawsuits for gross negligent acts would be like opening "pandora's box." Each year, FMRA invites affected families on a coordinated trip to Tallahassee. Together we ensure that legislators are aware of the dangers any person who falls in the free kill category is potentially susceptible to and what is really happening in our hospitals with no accountability. For 2023, the trip will take place the first week of session (March 8-9). If you are interested in meeting up or carpooling, please email contact@floridamedicalrights.org

If you are unable to travel to Tallahassee during that specific time but you would like more information on how you can make an impact while you are there, please join one of our Zoom calls or email us. Alternatively, and jointly, every county has at least one delegation meeting per year, leading up to the legislative session. As a member of the public you can attend to speak directly to the legislators who represent the area you live in and share your concerns. Generally speaking, this is a incredibly valuable to support change.

Below is a list of the upcoming meetings that are posted (more may be posted soon. If you do not see your county listed, google search "MY COUNTY + legislative delegation 2023" to locate the time, date and place of your area meeting. Alternately there is an active group who does an excellent job of environmental activism and they list out a majority of the meetings on their website here.

Be prepared to speak for 1-3 minutes. I recommend that you plan two speeches. One where you speak for 30 seconds per topic and one where you speak for one minute per topic: The main thing to remember is to speak from your heart. While some legislators have opposed a repeal of this law, new legislators are often entirely unaware.
Topics to cover:
1. Your loved one's cause of death and an an example of contributing gross negligence.
2. An explanation that you are being denied rights to access a court of law because your loved one is in the Florida Free Kill category and that you would appreciate your legislator supporting a repeal of §768.21(8).
